How a weighted grade is calculated
A 90% quiz category worth 20% of the course contributes 18 percentage points. A test category with the same score but a 50% weight contributes 45. Add the contributions, then divide by the sum of the weights entered.
How a simple grade average is different
When every score counts equally, add the percentages and divide by the number of scores. Three scores of 80%, 90%, and 100% average to 90%. Do not use a simple average when a syllabus assigns different weights to tests, homework, projects, or participation.
If your grading weights do not total 100%
This tool normalizes the weighted result across the categories you entered and shows their current total. That is useful for partial planning, but it may differ from a school system that treats missing categories as zero or applies special rules. Match the calculation to the written grading policy.
Points, percentages, and course categories
This page expects each row to be a percentage. If you only know points earned and points possible for one test, convert that score with the points-based test calculator first. If you need a full points-off chart, build an easy grader table. The distinction keeps unlike calculations from silently producing the wrong result.
What this calculator intentionally does not do
It does not store courses, student names, or grades. It is a transparent planning calculator, not a gradebook. Values remain in the browser tab, and the result should be checked against the official course policy before it is recorded.
